Hot Burrito #2

Eugene Chadbourne专辑介绍:by François CoutureIs it strange that a free improv (leaning toward free jazz) record wears the name of a country-rock song by the Flying Burrito Brothers? Not when you insert Eugene Chadbourne in the equation. It is on such occasions that he appears to be the missing link between country & western and free. This is a studio session recorded in 1992 with saxophonist Walter Malli and bassist Werner Dafeldecker. It holds many surprises. First, it remains very civilized, serious, and focused. No wacky moments, just involved improvising that could be termed &restrained& when comparing it to Chadbourne's usual output. Second, Dafeldecker plays like a free jazz bassist -- and a very good one. His vocabulary is extended and his touch particularly sensitive to textures, but nowhere as experimental as his other '90s projects (Polwechsel, Printer). Malli's elegant style and particularly warm tone on the soprano saxophone stirred the session in an introspective direction. The banjoist picks strings of notes as accompaniment, most of the time leaving the spotlight to the horn. The two-part &Country & Eastern& contains the hottest free-form playing, while &Haushuhn& sounds like sub-cool free jazz. Just to remind us that this is Chadbourne after all, a tasteful but still oddly out of context rendition of &Someday My Prince Will Come& brings the set to a close. First released on Extraplatter in the early '90s, Hot Burrito #2 was reissued on CD-R by House of Chadula. Sound quality is excellent. Recommended for fans of the serious side of the Doctor.
