Right as Rain: Dedicated to Werner Lüdi
by François CoutureAny solo album can be dreadful: The potential for linearity is simply too high. Yet, an inventive and resourceful player can pull it out. With 40 years of experience behind him, one can argue that Peter Brötzmann has what it takes. If his discography runs a mile long, his solo releases remain few. Right as Rain: Dedicated to Werner Lüdi was recorded in the studio over two days in August 2000. It comprises ten solo pieces. Brötzmann shifts between tenor saxophone, bass saxophone, bass clarinet, and C clarinet, which allows for color changes from one track to the next. If his lyricism sounds affected on "There Were Tears in Her Eyes," tracks like "Watchamacallit," "Do Not Remove," and "Right as Rain" showcase him in great shape. Surprisingly, most pieces revolve around a melody -- sometimes crystal-clear, at others drowned into a sea of notes. Fans of his in-your-face, power free jazz that is the basis of his Chicago tentet may find this CD lacking some testosterone. Those looking for a chance to hear the softer side of Brötzmann will find it here.
