by Steven Loewy This incarnation of The Wild Man's Band features the core of Brotzmann (on taragot, clarinet, and alto and tenor saxophones), Peter Ole Jorgensen (on drums), and Peter Friis Nielsen (on bass), with guest Mats Gustafsson (on tenor and baritone saxophones). As to be expected, this one burns hard, with the two reed players blowing fire into the music. Half of the tracks are less than four minutes apiece, but the intensity is so great throughout that the generously timed recording is difficult to absorb in one sitting. Some may find it all a touch self-indulgent, but there is no mistaking the incredible talent of every member of the quartet. This is clearly Brotzmann's show, with Gustafsson subservient to the elder's concept. Jorgensen and Nielsen do a magnificent job in support and on the front lines.
