Music Kills Me
by John BushJust as laughably out of touch and behind the times as on their 1999 debut, > has progressed from Underworld imitators to the filter-disco fad for their second full-length. The opener, "Le Rock Summer," and several other tracks plunder the smooth sheen of French disco four long years after Stardust and Bob Sinclar ruled global dancefloors -- admittedly, guitar students and Frampton fans may find a few nuggets in the talkbox solo. Several others recall the heavy riffing of ZZ Top or Van Halen (never in a good way), and the five minutes of looped, breathy flute playing on "It's Time to Go Now!" sound as though hijacked from any one of half a dozen This Is Acid Jazz compilations. > may have a thin veneer of electronica production, but most of their songwriting is rock crossover, through and through. When the band isn't pursuing half-baked ideas, they're recycling old riffs and motifs that have been done better by the artists mentioned above.
