Johnny Mathis was born in 1935 in San Francisco / USA. At the age of 13, he began training as an opera singer. Eight years later, he went to New York to try as a jazz singer. Mitch Miller, the musical director of Columbia Records, convinced Mathis to sing pop ballads. From 1957 on this resulted in hit after hit and the Crooner with the expressive tenor hit the US charts 44 times until 1984. He even managed to be in the upper realms of the charts during the peak of the Rock & Roll-boom.
