12 Clicks (The Bell Street Song)

12 Clicks (The Bell Street Song)

Waterline is a Melbourne indie rock band that soars like a bird then gutter crawls like a lizard through diverse Australian rock and roots landscapes including the occasional trip to the country. The band resonates influences including Don Walker, Paul Kelly and the Waifs. Bell Street is a road in the northern suburbs of Melbourne – cursed by everyone whose driven it running late to catch a flight at the airport, or being taken to Pentridge Prison in a black maria. 12 Clicks (or ‘the Bell Street Song’) tells the story of a guy who grew up near Bell Street and somehow seems to end up there every time something goes wrong in his life. In our old family FC Holden the odometer would click over 12 times from one end of the road to the other, hence the name of the song. The band – Al, Keef, Carla and Mick – are really happy with the song which was engineered by Hugh McDonald (Redgum). There’s a music video of it on Youtube which was shot entirely on and around Bell Street and gives a fantastic (but grungy) vignette of Melbourne’s northern suburbs – check it out!
