This song originated as a guitar duet I composed and recorded, called La Falsa Felicidad. I got the concept for the words from Tom Lehrer's Elements song, in which he listed every element on the periodic table as lyrics. Since it was a Mexican-style polka or corrida, I decided to use a list of Mexican place names as the lyrics. I used a map of Mexico, and made sure to include names of Aztec, Mixtec, and Mayan origin, was well as Spanish, and small obscure villages as well as famous places. It took 6 months for Mexican singer and multi-instrumentalist Jorge "Koky" Medina and I to finally get the several hundred syllables to fit the melody and rhythm. Koky helped put the middle section into idiomatic Spanish. I sang lead and played guitar. Koky sang harmony and played acoustic bass, as well as recording and mixing the song. I made the painting and designed the cover art. The song is my homage to the Mexican people, and I hope it makes them proud and happy to hear it.
