Built from Soul
In 2010 Jeff Lehman was doing a piano gig at the Entice Lounge in Detroit. On his break he was approached by a guy who looked familiar. The guy complimented Jeff on his voice and talent, and introduced himself as Charles Davis of The Contours. The two exchanged business cards and agreed to someday work together. Charles had even joined Jeff onstage in his next set and sang “Do You Love Me,” The Contours biggest hit to an enthusiastic, surprised crowd. Fast forward to May 2013 and Jeff had written a soul infused song that he was looking to duet with a renowned soul singer. Instantly Charles came to mind. Jeff tells the story, “I sent Charles the song in late June and informed him to be 100% honest with me about the song. I only wanted him to sing the song if he absolutely loved it. He did, and sang his lead for free. Having him over in early July to sing his part was very cool. I knew after he sang a couple lines he was the perfect vocal compliment to my part. He sang his ass off. I was geeked when the session was over.” The entire was song was recorded at Jeff’s Sound Advice Studios located at his house in Warren, Michigan, and his parent’s house in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The drums were cut in his parent’s basement, which was soundproofed and made into a studio in 1978. Jeff comments, “I love tracking drums in that room. The soundproofed walls always give me a nice tight drum sound.” On this song, Jeff’s high, smooth intimate, pop styled vocal performance is a nice blend to the soulful, raspy, wailing voice of Charles Davis. This session went so well, both Jeff and Charles are contemplating recording more original music together. Jeff Lehman, also performs with his own band, “Jeff Lehman’s City Lights,” as well as other acts including, Elliot Lurie’s Looking Glass, Joey Molland’s Badfinger, and many others. He has gained airplay as a solo artist with the songs, “Don’t Look Back,” and “Everything Must Change,” were played in Canada and Switzerland during 1997 and 2003 respectively.
