Any Fool Can Wear Their Heart On Their Sleeve is Les Clochards’ first studio album of all new music in four years, the follow-up to 2009’s lavishly praised Sweet Tableaux. The group – Karen Cleave, Roger Dalrymple, Peter Momtchiloff, Gary Neville and Ian Nixon – recorded the album with Martin Newton at BRS’s 101 Studio. The album develops Sweet Tableaux’s careworn balladeering on songs such as ‘Guilty as Charged’, ‘Oh But I Would’ and ‘Salut Clochard’, lurches into rambunctious uptempo bawlers such as ‘Under This Cloud’ and ‘Bogeyman’, hits the sticky ballroom floor for ‘He Can’t Help Being The Dog He Is’, and goes trucking with ‘On My Ass’. One moment a breathy murmur, the next a BeeGees falsetto dropping to a Johnny Cash growl, Cleave’s accordion scampering over Nixon and Momtchiloff’s songs like a field mouse over the belly of a farmer asleep in his hammock, these are lean, leathery songs with sharp clothes, bad teeth and a fag behind the ear. They’ve been out in the rain; you should let them in.
