This album features Stephane Grappelli at the peak of his form. He is partnered by guitarist Pierre Cavailli, plus rhythm guitar, bass, and drums. The original release information is not given, but the sessions took place in Paris in 1962. The program annotations, while basically good, are out of the correct order and overlook one number. Despite the early 1962 date, the sound engineering is excellent, with Grappelli and Cavailli well forward, firm sounds from the drums (especially the brushes!), and perhaps a recessed rhythm guitarist. Grappelli plays with sumptuous tone, superb technique, and an improvisational skill unsurpassed in 20th Century Jazz. He can take a lighthearted number such as Making Whoopee! and turn it into a mellifluous treat. Alabamy Bound is another track where Grappelli shows chops to burn, and almost seems to levitate. Collectors of Grappelli's discs from the end of his career should be put on notice that here is a demonstration of his greatness that supplements any of his later sessions.
