Recorded 100% on the fly during a hectic night at Fusion cafe, this one was dropped on to an pocket recorder via a Bass filter on a P.A. mixer, giving it a lovely bounce and hum, and making sure that they were unable to edit or process the results. Furtunately, they were on form that night and between serving drinks, cooking pasta and chatting to customers, managed to make a live mixtape of 5 jams which didn't require much more than putting back the bass that was filtered out in the first place. Starting off with the dreamy but fucused electro drum workout DEXTER'S QUANDRY. Underpinned my flitting synth lines and squiggles, it serves as a beautiful bed for Dexter's musings and the hysteria which surrounds him. Livening up his fight scene with Dokes and upping the urgency behind Lundy's search efforts. The drum beat pitches alternately lower and higher every 4 bars and despite lasting almost a millennia, it's ebbs and flows keep it fresh all the while. Using Porl's favourite little RT-223 to lace up the beat and a Kaossilator for the synth loops, it shows that you don't need to spend several months wages to make a phat track. Of course Pat was using half of NASA's super computer, but we'll ignore that for the sake of making a point. From there, they seemlessly move on to HINTER LAND, a track in which neither of the principles remember who did what. Leaving the synth line in the mix and descending it with a pitch echo, then introducing an Aphex type glitchy beat with 808s and those ever present tik tiks. At this point, having become wrapped up in Dexter's travails and tuned in to the spaciness of the world which they created that night, it seems like the album's been playing for an hour already, and this one taks you further in to the depths of space. As they were rudely interrupted by customers, Porl had to run off in to the kitchen and make some pasta, leaving Pat to again dream fondly of that Ronni Size Gig. Having never heard Pat lace up beats live before, and not knowing he was a drum&bass head, this one got Porl somewhat excited, and we think you'll see why. With surreally perfect timing, the kicks, the snares, the percussion and then the bass take shape, whilst all the time flitting between solo keys and the effects knobs. Listening to it, it's hard to work out how this was possible, but it was and this is the result. A track of exquisite timing, some truly accomplished musicianship and more to the point, HEART. Not satisfied with blowing the slowly swelling audience away with that one, Pat takes away a few of the drum layers and breaks it down in to one of his BLAXPLOITATION specials. The familiar sound of his synth clavs and horns reduce the tension created by the elongated techno musings so far and serve as the intro to the outro. DITHERING AROUND on the Kaossilaotor, while Pat has his traditional end of session cigarette outside, Porl laces up a tribute to one of his favourite movies (the Sicillian clan), and gets busy on his trusty EFX 1000. Just when the session is about to end, Pat makes his return bursting in like Batman to save the scene with a few wicked little techno flurrys, played off against one of Porl's somewhat rinsed out vocal samples from his 90's collection.
