Blending bubblegum pop bounciness with a Northern soul beat, The School’s retro charm produces a serotonin rush of pleasure. It’s unrestrained and unironic; like a copy of Jackie or TeenBeat, their latest EP is full of a love of boys, music and life. ‘Never Thought I’d See The Day’ leads off, a giddy blur of keyboards and handclaps that’s as sweet as candyfloss. There are covers of Jonathan Richman’s ‘When He Kisses Me’, where they sound a lot like Belle and Sebastian, and the Honeydrips’ ‘I Wouldn’t Know What To Do’, where they slow Mikael Carlsson’s tune down to wispy, glockenspiel-propelled indiepop. But the killer is their self-penned AA-side ‘Where Does Your Heart Belong?’, which mixes mid-60s soulful grooves with girl-group melodies and tender trumpet to produce a killer pop tune that sounds like Burt Bacharach busting moves at the Wigan Casino. If you thought debut album Loveless Unbeliever was good, on this evidence Reading Too Much Into Things Like Everything (out on 14 May) may just blow off your pop-sox.
