Expand & Surrender
Expand & Surrender are a six piece band that has spent years refining a dynamic sound on the glorious northern beaches of Sydney Australia. Songwriter Graeme 'gravey' Davey leads the joyous vocals with his all original blend of soul searching, quirky, awakening lyrics and melodies, all born from a love of the sea and an attitude of gratitude. Gravey has a unique brand of creativity , focusing entirely on his artistic skills, he has forge a life-time of art, film, design and music. A diverse artisan from left of field, from Mambo Graphics to Aussie surf movie classics and the creator of the iconic Triple J ‘Exploding Head’ art work, which hangs in the Australian National Gallery collection. His eclectic, eccentric and esoteric songs, fire the spirit in this band. Expand & Surrender have a good time feel with a solid punch as the triad of guitars strum your heart-strings. The thick and funky bass pins you down then lifts you even higher. They knock back some tasty rim-shots as the bold and brassy bravado of the sizzling sax and triumphant trumpets fill your sails. Expand with the reverb, Surrender to the back-beat as these soulful, zany, infectious tunes ignite your zest for celebration. Their seven track EP was released May 2015 and is available on iTunes and Triple J Unearthed. There is a rhythm in the ocean that rolls in waves, poetic, loving, ferocious and volatile, powered by natural forces to cascading in explosive celebration at its destiny. This is the Zen Zone, not the land and not the sea but a residue between two worlds, a threshold where the sands of time shift with the tides in a constant state of change. These are Wet Rock Rhythms. The rhythm of the sea, this is the groove. This is what we capture and extract into our music, into our songs and into our life. This is the place and this is the magic, this is where we Expand & Surrender Word: “I came across Expand & Surrender live at Venues on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The most memorable occasion was a sunny day in the park in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Avalon Fair. In the 60s and 70s I followed Tully and Tamam Shud from the Northern Beaches to the Ourimbah Rock Festival and even to the Sydney Town Hall. In the 90s I signed Tamam Shud to Polydor Records when they attempted a revival having survived all those drugs they took in the decades before. I'm not saying that Expand & Surrender is a Psychedelic experience like the Shud or Tully. However this laid back Surf Rock outfit with their great Gravey (lead singer) songs and backed by tight guitar and rhythm section gives me a similar feeling. Sun on your back and the smell of salt water from a nor'easter and tell me you don't know what I'm talking about. Wait till you hear Clive Hodson's Sax and other horns! He adds another wonderful dimension to E&S. Cruel Sea was able to create that same feeling for me. I saw them at the Sands at Narrabeen on a warm summer night and I felt 20 again. If I was a time traveller I would have taken Expand & Surrender back to the 70s and signed them. Listen to my favorite track ‘Rope Head’! There music is such a feel good! Just delightful. ~ Paul Dickson (former CEO Polygram Records) “Been giving the EP a listen and there’s some great stuff there mate. Love your brass work, especially the solo on ‘Something Special’. The chorus of ‘When Your Ship Comes In’ is epic and the tone you pull on ‘Bring it On’ is beautiful. Well done mate, you’re still rocking buddy and it’s great to see/hear. Keep it coming!” ~ Mark Callaghan (GangGajang/Riptides) "These cats are filth, they go off!" ~ Damian Lovelock (The Celibate Rifles) “Sunday morning, Zubi Bar, good coffee and fine organic surf flavoured music. Expand and Surrender are a relief from the unimaginative covers outfits. Laid back and cruizey … sun pouring in … what's not to like” ~ Lindsay Bjerre (Tamam Shud) “When they’re handing out the award for outstanding achievement in the field of “all original surf groove chill and zen-zone wet rock rhythms” at next year’s ARIA’s you can bet these guys will be taking it out. This six piece delivers old school feel good surf sounds that harks back to the time before Jack Johnson killed the reverb” ~ Vaughn Blakey – Surfing World Magazine “Expand and Surrender are for sure some of the greatest fresh, surf vibes blaring out of my stereo. Rope head is just one of the great tracks off their EP, truly some great indie surf groove out. Watch this space, as Gravey and the fellas expand and surrender your air waves. "Give thanks and praises" for Expand and Surrender.” ~ Dom Pereira – Bondi Radio "I really like your music!" ~ Andrew Farris (INXS)
