by Brian Olewnick Listeners familiar with the Guy Klucevsek who pumps out rollicking polkas, Cageian abstractions, or wacko renditions of John Zorn 's "Road Runner" might be surprised at the solemnity and quiet beauty of these works, written for various modern dance ensembles. Accompanied by a string trio, the pieces are delicate and darkly melodic, recalling both American folk forms and composers like Aaron Copland , albeit heard through a lens informed by minimalism; indeed, there are direct references to Phillip Glass in portions of the title track. Some themes are strikingly beautiful and haunting ("Sylvan Steps"), others fragile to the point of effervescence (the opening section of "Citrus, My Love"). Most of the compositions are situated in the upper registers of the instruments and Klucevsek's ability to wring pure, crystalline notes out of his unwieldy box is breathtaking. Divorced from the dance, some of the songs may drag just a bit, but more often they are subtly ravishing, shedding light on another facet of this masterful musician.
