While dramatic and ambitious at its heart, their original sounds hardly draw attention, or feel unfamiliar. Integrated with violins, guitars, body percussion, and Missy’s quirky vocals, instead, these samples make for complexly layered music that’s beautiful and eerie—and slightly reminiscent of female powerhouses *****, Kate Bush, and Coco Rosie. “***** is probably my uber hero,” Missy says. “She just pushes boundaries.” The artists started making music together at the end of 2009, both abandoning their previous projects to start something together. “We just went in with an open mind,” Missy says of the first time they collaborated together in the studio. As the story goes, the song they recorded that day, called “Teenage Flower,” set the benchmark for their intuitive, organic, and highly spontaneous approach. (It will be included on their first-full length album coming out this summer.)
