With its airy melodies bolstered by percussion, Heart of the Wind: Music for Native American Flute & Drums is a disc of atmospheres and flight. However, you get the feeling that throughout this recording, neither of these excellent musicians is playing to the true level of his abilities. Instead, they seem content with simplicity. There's nothing wrong with that, per se; in fact, simplicity can be a plus. Yet the pervading feeling is that they're settling for the lowest common denominator here. There's no sense of effort and exploration, but simply one of cranking up the reverb on the flute as a substitute for passion. As idle background music it's fine, but if you seek something profound, this isn't where you'll find it.
