4am. It’s the time of day that is both early and late, depending on your state of mind. It’s also the music you want to hear, the unbridled excitement for sound and expression that drives people to dance and love and just plain rock. 4am is rock, plain and simple. The band was formed with a sort of divine urgency by singer/bassist Woo as a vehicle for his love of all things rock n’ roll. Joined by Rob on drums and Lincoln on guitar, 4am was born in a way not too dissimilar to those fleeting points of inspiration that creep into your head in the wee hours. With songs inspired by life and its follies, 4am look to make music that is straightforward and true. There is no subtext, no arch subtleties; this is music to challenge the senses and appeal to that core desire to cut loose. 4am is fun, sarcastic, melancholy and pensive but always, unfailingly, pure rock n’ roll. I wish the production was better. That starting bass feels a little unsolid. I like the U2 guitar thing with the harmonics. It's good song writing. Some of the guitar parts are super solid. Guitar solo: always my favorite part of a song! Nice, a real solo. I can tell you've actually worked it out. It's nice work writing-wise. You play it well, also. I think it could improve in effects a little. More reverb on it? It sounds like a small amp in the middle of these lush tones in the rest of the song. I think the guitar at the start of the song isn't quiet in tune on some high frets - maybe it's not set up right or you need a better guitar. :) On the vocals - you've got a good voice for this genre. Seriously, you have great potential. You need to work with a vocal coach, like most every good vocalist does. Even just singing your a** off for an hour a night with your itunes is a good idea. You're missing a few notes, and you're not slapping that vocal track down hard. You've got probably 3 times more power in your voice than you've got on this track. Seriously, don't be afraid to practice your voice as hard as you (or your guitarist) have practiced guitar. It takes work! And if it's pop you're singing, there's no room for anything put read-for-american-idol chops. Keep recording songs and playing out by all means - you don't suck, I'm not saying that. But keep working on your voice. Some of the guitar tracks are just wicked tightly recorded. Well done. Peace. No musical intro works great with this song. 6 seconds: not the most original sound/arrangements but super effective in Power pop. The 16th guitar muffled in the verse and exploding in the chorus is kinda the trademark of Power pop. The melody is great and super commercial. The vocalist's voice sound nice even with the big processing. 20 seconds: Chorus ? This part is good but the mix when the drums comes in is a little muddy, it looses definition and is all stuck in the mids. Could sound cleaner. Some back vocals would be very nice in this part 29 seconds: the ou ah ou part is commercially correct 40 verse: Not too convinced by the additional guitar track. The idae of building up and adding stuff is great but this particular guitar track is a little irritating 52 chorus: read above 1:00 musical break leading to bridge 1:08 bridge: cool riff and melody. Very USA band 1:33 verse: read above 1:48 chorus: read above. Really, some back vocals arrangements would be great. 2:18 The ou ah ou part over the hook is cool. Abbey Road brilliance pack Lead vocals: sound perfect for the genre. Guitar: basic power riff Bass and drums: clean and sober Lyrics: classic girl song. Well written Overall: everything i imagine a power pop song to be. has everything and the structure is well crafted. The only thing is the sparkle. The song's sound doesn't sparkle like it should. Many toys/tools are available from Crysonic, Izotope and even from Abbey Road plug in to put your final mix through and make it sparkle. Pretty good pop sensability to the song with a couple of distinctive hooks. This song is tailor-made to be played on the radio or at least some current MTV song. I want to let this out in the beginning. This song feels very standard and has a very "used" order or chords. Hovewer. It is what you do with it that counts. The Vocals are also very standard... but the singer is at least pretty good. I in to my second listen now to give it a fair shot... I actually like the intro. The intro is quite good. It's the verse and the vocal melody that hangs with it that feels like it comes around to much. The first instrumental bridge is also quite good. cool drumming on the second verse! Knocks things up a notch! And on the Chorus there actually is a very cool vocal line that's not so regular and pretty much more your own, which is very cool! Well, my personal tip to you is to speed up things a bit and try to put some more parts in there the next time you are arranging a song like this one! It was a pleasant listen. Vocal melody rips off All The Small things. Ouch. That song is still too fresh in most folks memories for you to pull this off without comparisons. Your drummer is really good. He just knows exactly what to do in the right places. Keeps a solid rhythm and doesn't do lame stuff unless there's a transition. His beats reminds me of ska/raggae. The singer. Tisk. Mediocre love songs only sound good when sung by a charismatic personality. You can learn stage presence, you can learn to write good songs, but you can't learn charisma. It comes from experience, so I'll give him a pass. I loved the band's attempt at creating vocal hooks, dropping the verse mood, and bringing it back up. This sounds like the beginning of great pop excellence. If I managed this band I would formulate it into a pop band and get that singer to dual take some of his vocal parts, and beat him up when he starts singing weak. Sing it like you mean it man! The mix was done pretty well. The vocals I would tone down a bit on the reverb and maybe pull the singer off the mic. The bass is a bit boomy for my tastes but works well with the dance beats.
