Circle do dreamy pop music, and they're good at it too. Providing a good start is New Holidays, which builds slowly a satisfying climax, followed by the upbeat, Ben Folds-esque Would You Believe Me. The Ben Folds comparisons are particularly apt because of Radi Safi's similar vocal style and the omnipresent tinkling piano, but this does them no harm (unless you hate Ben Folds). Circle's sense of pop is very clean and shiny – which can be a dangerous groove to fall into – but fortunately they stay out of trouble by ticking all the right boxes. While the instrumentation is diverse, the same cannot be applied to Safi's vocals, which lack in variety (though he does sing backwards on Old School, which is a nice change of pace and quite unexpected). All said however, this is undoubtedly a strong pop record that is well worth checking out.
