Better Late Than Never
Betamax came together during the spring of 2006 and, after a few line-up changes, the group whittled down to an Americana power trio. Kim Ruehl has been entertaining crowds in venues ranging from subway platforms to Unitarian Universalist churches to clubs like CBGB Gallery in NYC and record stores in the Northwest for going on a decade now. After years of classical training on flute, piano and voice, she headed out at 19 to tour the US as a solo folksinger. Since then, she's been zigging and zagging back and forth across the contiguous 48, living and playing in cities from Portland to New Orleans to New York and every major and minor stop in between. Now based in Seattle, she performs regularly at Seattle's finest folk venues, and works as a freelance writer. Karen Lindenberg is a founding member of Seattle grassrock supergroup Skitterpup. Both a lifelong classically trained and play-by-ear pianist, Karen began writing songs in grade school and picked up guitar in high school. Formerly of the infamous Bay Area band Strange Bedfellows, she's sung with the Mission Dolores Choir and the Peninsula Women's Chorus in San Francisco, and Seattle's most adventurous a cappella choir, The Esoterics. A lifelong guitarist, Dean Luce has been playing the mandolin for a few years, and toying with the accordion for at least as long. A founding member of the posthumous Bellingham bluegrass band Red Wreckers, Dean relocated to Seattle in 2006. He responded to an ad on Craigslist when BetaMax was looking for a multi-instrumentalist, and has been a vital part of the group ever since. On their deubut CD Better Late Than Never, the band marks its stance among the great Americana bands of the Pacific Northwest, integrating elements of funk, rock, folk, and bluegrass.
