Like a shoreline scintillating in the distance, New York’s Banda Magda’s sound blurs distinctions and suggests wonders: a bangle-shaking buzzard, a moonstruck fisherman, battered but seaworthy boats. The band’s polychrome island echoes with tales of the joys of friendship and true devotion to craft. The perfect complement to 2013’s Amour, t’es là? (named one of the year’s best world music albums by NPR), Yerakina vibrates with the same bright, bold strokes. Yet instead of focusing on bandleader, singer, and composer/arranger Magda Giannikou’s originals, the album takes on favorite traditional and cover songs from around the globe: Colombia, Greece, France, Brazil, Italy, Mexico. Rhythms and melodies from different corners of the globe cross-pollinate, giving chansons Afro-Peruvian sway or Greek folk tunes a mad dash of Northeastern Brazilian beats. “I wanted this album to be more about the band and less about me, and that was easier to accomplish with songs that weren’t mine,” reflects Giannikou. “I didn’t want to be in that personal place, about me, what I think about. Instead, we decided to just let’s play the song, no personal stake or attachment. We could do whatever we wanted.” This freedom means coloring outside the lines. Songs honed over several years of intense collaboration and touring mix instruments and lovingly unite disparate places. Traditional Greek rockers (“Trata,” “Yerakina”), gentle but driving ballads (“El Pescador,” “Petite Fleur”), samba and baião numbers incorporate everything from kitchen ware to hammered dulcimer, from full and rich horn arrangements to shimmering vibraphone, in wonderfully seamless, addictive songs.
